2019 Election: Police Vow To Deal With Perpetrators Of Violence In Oyo: IBADAN – The Oyo State Police Command, on Thursday, has vowed to deal decisively with individuals and politicians who engage in any form of violence before, during and after the fast approaching general elections.

Abiodun Odude, the state Commissioner of Police, gave the warning in his speech at a stakeholders’ meeting held with staff of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political party leaders, candidates and party supporters, at the command headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan.

He said that the stakeholders meeting, which had the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mutiu Agboke, as well as leaders and candidates of various political parties in attendance, was called in compliance with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Adamu.

The Oyo police boss assured that his command was determined to provide level playing ground for all political parties in the state, adding, “we are also resolutely committed to providing peaceful and conducive atmosphere devoid of acrimony throughout the electioneering period.”

He, however, vowed to bring the full weight of the law on any erring groups or individuals who indulge in acts capable of heating up the polity.

Odude said the Oyo State command would not fold its arms while “some disgruntled anti-democratic elements set the state on conflagration of some sorts.”

The CP said further, “We are pique by recent disturbing activities of some overzealous party supporters whose actions, caustic comments or utterances prelude crisis and could set the stage for violence in the state. Needless to say, that this is capable of threatening free, fair and credible elections in the state.

“Recently the command has been inundated with petitions by some aggrieved party loyalists who complained that their posters and bill boards were being maliciously defaced, destroyed or removed outright by yet-to-be identified agents of opposition parties. Similarly, some political parties have begun to make inflammatory remarks and hate speeches aimed at denigrating their opponents.”
