This artificial intelligence can predict the ‘farak’ waves of the sinking of the ship minutes in advance

Rogue waves are surprisingly large ridges of water known to appear out of the blue to ambush unlucky boaters and beachgoers. But a new artificial intelligence model can predict most of these surprising bulges up to five minutes in advance, report mechanical engineers Thomas Breunung and Balakumar Balachandran, of the University of Maryland at College Park, on July 18 at. Scientific Reports.

With crests more than twice as high as surrounding waves, rogue waves can form where converging swells raise a single, amplified wave or where ocean currents crush swells into powerful waves. Although researchers have noted that some patterns can predict these sudden increases, no effective prediction algorithm has yet been developed (SN: 6/8/15). Such a tool can be a lifesaver – from 2011 to 2018, collected eyewitness accounts show that rogue waves killed 386 people and sank 24 ships.
