Brief biography

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has been serving as the fourth Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa since the country’s transition to democracy. Born in the small village of Goo-Mokgatlha (Koffiekraal) in the North West province, he is married to Mmaphefo and has three children.

Mogoeng obtained his B Juris and Bachelor of Laws degrees from the universities of Zululand and Natal, respectively. He also holds a Master of Laws degree from the University of South Africa. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of the North West in October 2013, and by the University of Johannesburg in March 2018.

Having been appointed as a Judge of the North West High Court in June 1997, Mogoeng later served as a Judge of the Labour Appeal Court in April 2000. He was then promoted to the position of Judge President of the North West High Court in October 2002.

In 2009, Mogoeng was appointed to the Constitutional Court of South Africa, and in September 2011, he was further elevated to the role of Chief Justice. Additionally, he was elected as the President of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Africa in April 2017 for a two-year term, and appointed as Chancellor by the Council of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in August 2017 for a four-year term.

Career

Mogoeng embarked on his legal career in 1997 when he accepted a position at the North West High Court. Despite feeling initially inexperienced, he quickly proved his capabilities and rose through the ranks.

By 2002, he had assumed the role of Judge President of the North West High Court, a position he held until 2009.

In 2009, Mogoeng’s career took a significant turn as he was appointed as a Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, the highest court in the nation.

His appointment was part of President Jacob Zuma’s judicial appointments, and throughout his tenure on the Constitutional Court, Mogoeng played a crucial role in upholding the Constitution and ensuring justice for all South Africans.
